Our Journey

When Daniel, Amiqa’s co-founder embarked on building his family-owned small hotels in Central America, he brought with him over 15 years of experience from some of the world’s largest hotel chains in highly competitive markets like Spain and Mexico.

Throughout his journey, Daniel recognized a common challenge: most hotel management software was overly complex and prohibitively expensive. These corporate solutions were designed for large hotels with extensive management hierarchies, requiring department heads to report to senior executives—a structure that simply doesn’t exist in small hotels.

Determined to change this, Daniel, now based in Stockholm, set out to create Amiqa with co-founders Carlos, Iván and Mauricio. They combined their expertise from working at tech startups and financial institutions to develop a streamlined automation solution specifically designed for small hotels.

Daniel Porras

CEO ⎜ Expertise in Hotel Management

He’s tackled a variety of roles in the hotel industry, from overseeing catering services to making sure that the players and staff of one of Europe’s top football clubs enjoyed a comfortable stay before a critical Champions League match. His experience spans working with Sheraton Hotels under Marriott International and founding two family-run hotels along the Pacific coast of Central America.

CPO ⎜ Product and Growth Management Expertise

Carlos once dreamed of writing about technology, but life had other plans. Instead, he found himself working for the United Nations and various international development organizations in Central America, digitizing an award-winning magazine, and eventually moving to Estonia. There, he joined tech companies designing and building the software that powers businesses in the forestry and manufacturing industries in Latin America and beyond.

CTO ⎜ Data Science Expertise

Iván traded the sunny streets of Madrid for the winter wonderland of Tallinn to join a fast-growing fintech startup after leading data science teams in microfinance institutions. With experience at Banco Santander building machine learning models, he’s now using his expertise to develop models tailored for small hotels. Iván also mentors Amiqa’s team on machine learning and other complex topics that are tough to grasp.

Mauricio Portilla

CXO ⎜ Experience Management Expertise

Mauricio decided to make a slight shift in his career from ecology to designing products and services used by millions of people worldwide. After studying at Hyper Island in Stockholm, he pursued a path focused on user-centric business innovation, digitalization, and sustainability at consultancy firms and companies like Spotify. At Amiqa, he has developed user-oriented processes that transform ideas into solutions, engaging stakeholders from the hotel industry and delivering great customer experiences.
